Awards

This past weekend, I attended the Latino/a Youth Leadership Alumni banquet.  The student organization/conference I help out on my spare time. Even though the attendance was modest, I knew there was much enthusiasm and appreciation from the kids, which is all the world. They even gave me another award.

Pretty cool. Bad picture. Didn’t even have time to shine my new choppers. Here are other pictures. Courtesy of Erika Borges.

My friend Erika Borges also got a cool award, she one of the main recipients. Erika told me she didn’t ask for one, that all the work we do is from the heart.

Yeah, but sometimes they want to show their appreciation for the hard work we all do. So you have to accept it. Even though we do it without any thoughts of awards or attention, it’s something that we ‘just do’ for them.

I remember my old band director, Mr. Turner, told us one thing I remember to this day– and I paraphrase: “Trophies and awards will gather dust up on a shelf; it’s the memories that you will treasure for a lifetime.”

If we get awards it’s fine and if we don’t that’s fine also.

I have a mess of awards and plaques next to me. When I look at them I have those memories…

  1. Awesome. That is one reason I can’t leave the classroom. Just knowing that every year I get a chance to help more kids. They may never remember what I did for them, but that is ok. Good Going Rick.
